Brief History
1970’s – The Middletown Lions Club began meeting in May, 1976. The sponsoring club was St Matthews. Charter night was held September 18, 1976 with 23 members. In May 1977 two projects began that still continue today in some manner. Those two projects were eye screenings at the Kentucky State Fair and selling brats at the annual Middletown Festival.
1980’s- Over $13,000 dollars were donated to the Crusade for Children from our involvement in running the Middletown Festival. MLC Started the “Lions High Tech Fund” which became a state wide project and funded Computers with speech, enlarged text and other assistive devices for blind and visually impaired students. Also the Middletown Lions Club was involved with the Middletown Recreation Association. We conducted fishing and bowling trips with the visually impaired and provided $1000 scholarships to Eastern High School from our hot air balloon races.
1990’s- We started some new projects-Adopt a highway from 1990-1998, Entertainment Books from 1991- 2006, Bingo from 1994 -2001. The club was incorporated in 1994 and we moved to our present meeting location in 1995. In 1996 a Leo Club was chartered at Eastern High School and they have been invaluable in helping us serve over the years. Our Light Up Middletown project began in 1997 and continues today.
2000’s- Past Lion President Dick Gould spearheaded the Annual Bowling for Sight fundraiser which takes place every February. Also our annual golf scramble was expanded in 2003 and continues to grow each year. These two events have become 2 of our largest fundraisers each year. In 2005 we helped sponsor a new club in Shelbyville. In 2008 we began assisting the City of Middletown with it’s Music in the Park series and this continues today. We also rolled out the Annual Cornhole Classic at the 2008 Middletown Festival.
2010’s- We have enjoyed our largest growth of membership and have settled into the mid 30’s in membership. MLC provides coffee, cups, creamer, sugar, pepper, and salt to Wayside Christian Mission several mornings per week. We continue to provide eye glasses to those unable to purchase them. For approximately 15 years we have contributed in total over $46,000 to principle debt reduction at Lions Camp Crescendo so they can provide services to special needs children. We support Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation research as well as other philanthropic entities. MLC continues to be a part of the Middletown Family Fun Festival by having energy burning activities for children free of charge.
COVID Ouch!
2020’s We continue to have food drives and donate those items to local food pantries. We support Water Step. We raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research fund, special needs at our elementary schools, help with eye screenings, help with field day at Kentucky School for the Blind, and are always looking for those special needs that can fall thru the cracks.
